Los Angeles, CA. – I’m a father of an 11 year old boy, and parenthood is new to me. When my son was born, I was filled with many happy emotions and joy, and also some anxiety about whether I am capable of being a good parent. I grew up in a dysfunctional home and my parents did their best to raise me with the skills that they had. The following Frederick Douglass quote is so true today as it was during the times he lived:

I have no doubt that Douglas observed in others patterns of behaviors, attitudes and actions that were self-destructive to themselves, their relationships and society. In his wisdom he concluded that the role of parents and parenting is critical to raising healthy children that will contribute to society and lead positive lives.

Because I grew up in a dysfunctional home, I carried with me habits, behaviors, patterns and a negative mindset that I did not realize I was passing down to my own son. This book made me aware of myself, my past upbringing and how I am parenting. Fortunately the book discusses a lot of the issues a parent might encounter, and how to approach the issue in a positive, constructive and healthy way as opposed to passing down old generational flawed influences. The great thing is that each chapter provides exercises and tips to share with your child and work through together, which provides an engaging and quality time to learn and grow closer to your child and better understanding. I’m grateful for the timing of this book, as my son is entering the teenager years, and fortunately my relationship with my son is positive and healthy and is going to get even better as we work through the book together.
Author Amy Morin provides valuable real examples from her patients she treats during her practice, and offers guidance and new paradigm approaches to ensure that our relationship with our children is healthier and lays a solid foundation for which they have the tools to how to best deal with life’s challenges. The goal is to raise our children to become healthy and whole and to have values and principles that guide them that builds confidence, self-esteem and a strong mental strength to ensure they live happy, successful and healthy relationships.
