Carson, CA. – The fourth and final leg of the UCI World Cup Series kicked off last night at the Velo Sports Center. The world’s top elite cyclists are in town to compete one last time over two days to qualify for the 2017 UCI Track Cycling World Championships to be held in Hong Kong on April 12-16. This is the last major competition before world’s and the first time since 2008 that Los Angeles as hosted a world cup event.
The Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup Los Angeles will feature more than 200 of the world’s top riders who will compete in both team and individual events from February 25-26 – Sprint (men & women), Keirin (men & women), Scratch (15 km men & 10 km women), Madison (30 km men & 20 km women), Individual Pursuit (women), Team Pursuit (women), Omnium (men), and the Team Sprint (men & women).
Last night at the Velo Sports Center on the campus of California State Univesity Dominguez Hills featured three qualifying races featuring 2016 World Champion riders. The U.S. Women’s Team Pursuit squad topped their field at a time of 1:09.632 with a lineup that includes three members of the Olympic silver-medal winning team from Rio – Kelly Catlin (Arden Hills, Minn.), Chloe Dygert (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif.).
“We felt really good,” Dygert said of the qualifying race on Friday. “We didn’t have a clue what to expect, so we just went out with positive attitudes and it worked out for the best. I’ve trained a lot on this track, so it’s great to be racing here.”
In the Women’s Team Sprint, Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova, representing the Gazprom-Rusvelo team, won the world title for Russia in 2016 and finished on top on Friday night with a time of 18.851. The Men’s Team Sprint trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins also advance with the top time in their event at 17.403. The Women’s Team Sprint final will be raced during Saturday’s evening session, and the Men’s Team Sprint final on Sunday evening.
Racing takes place throughout the weekend at the VELO Sports Center at StubHub Center, on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif. Both Saturday and Sunday feature two sessions of racing – morning sessions beginning at 11:00 am PT, and evening sessions starting at 6 pm PT. Saturday’s evening finals include the Men’s Scratch 15 km, Men’s Sprint, Women’s Keirin, Men’s Sprint, Women’s Team Pursuit, Women’s Team Sprint and Men’s Omnium races.
