State of the LA Galaxy

By Carlos Hernandez, Sports Writer

LA GalaxyThe LA Galaxy began the 2016 Major League Soccer season on an up and down roller coaster, winning their first match four goals to one against D.C United and then going on the road to face off against the Colorado Rapids where they lost one goal to zero. Days later they took on their California Classico rivals, the San Jose Earthquakes where they won three goals to one. Their recent match was against the Vancouver Whitecaps where it was a tale of both teams, starting with the home team the Vancouver Whitecaps creating the first goal scoring opportunity of the match which was a low direct shot which was saved by LA Galaxy starting goalkeeper Brian Rowe. Things would then go downhill for the Vancouver Whitecaps as Matias Loba was shown a red card for tackling LA Galaxy player Mike Magee. That led the LA Galaxy to create a goal scoring chance of a Mike Magee long ball service from the left flank to Sebastian Lletget who headed the ball towards goal but not with much power as the ball was grabbed by the Vancouver Whitecaps starting goalkeeper David Ousted. Brian Rowe also made a save on a dangerous volley shot by Andrew Jacobson who was aiming to put the ball to the back of the right side goal net, only to see Brian Rowe dive to the right side in preventing the Vancouver Whitecaps from going up on the scoreboard. The second half saw the LA Galaxy keep good control of the ball but unlucky in finishing off their chances. Second half substitute Gyasi Zardes who recently arrived from helping the U.S Men’s National Soccer Team defeat Guatemala four goals to zero had the best chance to put the LA Galaxy in the lead. Starting with a right diagonal pass from Sebastian Lletget, Gyasi Zardes received the ball perfectly of his first touch and then shooting the ball towards goal only to see his shot be deflected off a Vancouver Whitecaps defender and the goalkeeper. In stoppage time, the LA Galaxy had their last good chance of winning the match of a corner kick which was headed by Alan Gordan to the right side of the goal net but wide and away from entering the back of the net. The match would end in a zero to zero draw in which the LA Galaxy were successful throughout the match in maintaining possession from the left and right flanks all thanks to Sebastian Lletget and Emmanuel Boateng who took on their defenders and got through them in their pursuit of delivering low dangerous passes to the LA Galaxy offense. Brian Rowe kept the LA Galaxy in the game courtesy of his great goalkeeping saves where the LA Galaxy defense had a troubling time to pressure against the Vancouver Whitecaps offense. As for the Vancouver Whitecaps who played a man down they did everything they could to find the victory but just fell short on the final touch when it came to capitalizing their chances which were unsuccessful. Both teams got a point yet the LA Galaxy is on top of the Vancouver Whitecaps in fourth place in the Western Conference Standings, as to the Vancouver Whitecaps being in sixth place.
